Exhibition of Artist Dave King
King, originally a student of art schools both in Cardiff and Chelsea, taught art and photography for 30 years.
With multiple exhibitions across the UK over the years, King is now a resident of the Algarve and will be having will be having his fifth show of work in the Algarve here at the MARLO showroom.
King clearly has been influenced from multiple artistic genres, and takes joy in bringing them together. The seemingly simplistic shapes and arrangements within these paintings do not come from a Pop Art or cartooning tradition but are a result of improvised drawing – ‘playing’ with line. The process is a ‘game’ of lining things up and jig-sawing shapes together. Dave’s interest in Abstraction and Cubism ultimately dictates the outcome.
The subject matter is recognisable but he deals with these subjects purely in terms of their shape and colour.
The works do not depict any particular place but allow the viewer to recognise objects and scenes from their own memories.
Vernissage: Friday the 30th of August 5-8pm
The exhibition will be on display until October.
Held at the MARLO Outdoor Furniture Showroom. Welcome to all. Drinks will be served.

Meet the Artists: Alli Cycon & Elizabeth Honey-Roberts
Marlo will be hosting our second ‘Meet the Artist’ event on the evening of June 14th at our Outdoor Furniture showroom.
For the next exhibit, Marlo will be showcasing Lagos local Alli Cycon. Well known locally for being the creative lead at some of the city's most iconic and loved hospitality venues, noted as much for their interior design as well as their menus. Having frequently taken a hands on role, in both the conceptualisations of the interior design, she was often the person who actually sourced, built, painted, crafted & created the majority of the elements that brought these places alive, and takes pride in having done so on challenging budgets.
Alli is also an artist in her own right. Normally more comfortable behind the scenes, this will be the first time Alli has exhibited her private works. Fueled with a desire to make artwork accessible, Alli focus on abstract forms and textures, taking inspiration from coastal living.
Joining the evening will be an Interior designer of equal local notoriety.
Elizabeth Honey is a locally-based Interior Designer who has designed residential and commercial spaces across the Algarve. Elizabeth will be joining us at this event to share her insights on ways to approach the design of Algarve interior and exterior spaces, and will be looking at the various styles and materials available which can influence and inspire this process. This will be an informal presentation with plenty of opportunity for discussion and Q&A´s.
The event will start at 5pm-8pm on the 14th of June. Open to all. Refreshments will be served.
The artworks will be on display and available for purchase until August.

More about the Elizabeth.
Elizabeth Mayston has a diverse creative background including textile design, home furnishing creation, ceramic design, painting and photography.
Elizabeth learned pattern-making and furniture restoration in Paris which has influenced her ever since. The experience led to further studies in Textile Design and her success within the industry soon followed back in South Africa where she was inspired by a new vibrant energy in the country.
Elizabeth took her artistry further by starting to paint portraits in oils. Her love of the outdoors and especially walking and hiking, led to the creation of many landscapes. Inspiration was freely and easily found around Cape Town - in the picturesque vineyards, glorious mountain trails overlooking fertile valleys and along the beautiful coastlines. She explored the pathways, spellbound by the exquisite contrasts and harmonies of the colours of earth and sky.
Elizabeth's zest for nature also unleashed a passion for photography. The camera allowed her to capture a moment of beauty, while the painting gave her the freedom to express the mood and emotion, often lost in a photo. Her favourite subjects were the indigenous flora of the Cape, called Fynbos (internationally known as the Sugarbush). Initially using a camera to capture flora up close and in detail using a macro lense, this added a new dimension to the way she visualized subjects on canvas.
In 2018, Elizabeth immigrated to Portugal. She spent months exploring her new surroundings, especially Monchique and the Algarve, absorbing the vibrancy of the country and portraying this with her fresh colour palette. The move has allowed her to embrace and explore new opportunities. It was in this spirit that Elizabeth founded Galeria MonChic in 2019, where not only paintings but also beautiful decorative trinkets were created and remain in keeping with the artists own original chic. This is Elizabeth’s first exhibition in Lagos and we are delighted to be showing her work.

Artist Exhibits: Daniel Hasselmyr
Starting summer 2023, we’ll be exhibiting various artists at the Marlo showroom.
Kicking us off is Swedish artist Daniel Hasselmyr.
Daniel’s work is strongly representational, if not particularly dedicated to the visual facts of a place. Primarily interested in the tradition of watercolour most associated with drawing, though he takes varied approaches to materials and process. Recently Daniel has begun making paintings of the plant kingdom. His longstanding interest in these Matisse/Rousseau like forms has led to several interesting paintings that can be seen at Marlo.
